  • This year Joe kicks off a lunch lottery program. Each week he will draw two club members names. Those two members should go to lunch within the following two weeks and then report back to the club about what they learned from each other. The first pairing is Darren Doi and Laura Benson.
Raffle: Sandra O’Meara wines! I mean wins.
The 3-Part Program:
First, President Joe shared his kickoff message for the year. He introduced the new Rotary banner and international theme of “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity.” He also shared his personal theme of “Fewer meetings, more fun.” He said he was concerned that the club members might suffer from burnout, and reminded everyone that people need to be fresh to lend a hand. He wants members to participate in the activities that they want to do. President Joe challenged the club to make sure that all meetings have a purpose, are convenient and are no longer than they need to be. Going forward, the board meetings will follow club meetings the third week of every month. Since everyone in the club is on the membership committee, membership meetings will be held during club meetings.
Second, Liz Werhane introduced the new format for The Bugle newsletter. Visit The Bugle, or The Blogle as it’s nicknamed, at If you’re reading this, you figured that out. No passwords are needed. You can see club photos on Flickr. Consider bookmarking the website for easy access.

Wendy Explains Mentor Program

Third, David Velarde, Diane Cecala and guest Wendy McGregor introduced a new mentor program for emancipated foster youth in conjunction with Santa Barbara City College. Students age 18 and up simply need someone who is available to support them, talk with them and sometimes provide advice about the day-to-day things students encounter after high school. About 10 mentors will be needed who can spend about two hours each week from August through May supporting an individual student. Contact Diane Cecala to learn more or sign up.
President Joe thanked everyone and adjourned the meeting.
