President Joe Weiland called the meeting to order.

  • Invocation: Any Doerr

  • Raffle: Lily Carey, a bottle of wine

Club Announcements:

  • Fiddlers’ Festival: It’s still October 9. The organizing committee will meet on 9/22. Invite friends to the event. Under 17 enter for free. Ready to volunteer? Sign up with Scott Johnson.
  • Tickets available for the Museum of Natural History Artwalk. Dennis Johns donated $25 for them.
  • Hoedown will be October 16. Please sign up. It starts at noon at Hollister Ranch. Lunch will be served at 3ish. Family members and dogs welcome.
  • District Conference will be the weekend of October 22, 23, 24. Don’t forget to register.

President’s Announcements:

  • Joe welcomed Gabriel Papa since he was not present for the induction the prior week.
  • The GSE team from Korea will arrive on Oct. 15. We will host them Sunday through Tuesday night.
  • Rotary past presidents are being asked to consider becoming president of a new Rotary club. If you are interested, please contact District Governor Wade Nomura.
  • Colin Stephens has returned after a few months away. Welcome back.
  • Rotary Lunch Lottery: The newest pairing is Diana Cecala and Sandy Grasso-Boyd
  • Axxess Books: If you would like to purchase an Axxess card, which provides discounts to numerous restaurants and services around town, bring a $30 check next week. The check should be made out to La Colina PTSA because this is a fundraiser for La Colina.

Program: David Vo’s craft talk

  • David’s aunt was a spy for the military in the Vietnam War. His family came to America from Vietnam through a church sponsorship.
  • David grew up in Monterey Park, California, and went to school at UC Santa Barbara.
  • He works in quality assurance at Citrix Online.
  • In addition to technology, he is interested in biking, building flashlights, and cooking and eating good food.
  • David shared photos from his travels.

Program Part II: AJ and Greg, doctoral students in behavioral economics at Middlebury College.

  • All club members participated in the experiment as bidders in a wine auction.
  • This is part of a research project that aims to identify the best way to turn in-kind donations into money for charities.
  • The research is funded by the National Science Foundation.
  • The funds from the auction will go to the Rotary club.
  • The winners were Tim Durnin and Jody Dolan-Holehouse.
