  • Don Bennett announced that the Rotary bell ringing for the Salvation Army has continued to be successful. The previous weekend brought in $421. Donations of time — for Saturday, Dec. 18 — or money are still being accepted.

  • Mark Reinhardt announced that the International Committee will meet at 7:30 AM at Mulligans on Tuesday.
  • Colin Stephens announced that our club has submitted a matching grant with a Rotary club in Brazil to provide kitchen supplies to a charitable organization there.

President’s announcements:

  • Joe Weiland invited quite a few members to stand up. They were all past presidents (and two future past presidents). He then announced the President Elect Nominee: Betsy Monroe. <applause!>
  • The Symposium to End Poverty Sustainably will be January 28 at UCSB. Contact Bill Boyd for more information.
  • You can still contact Walt Stephens to sign up to decorate the Rotary Rose Parade float on December 31.
  • Bill Wilmer and Gary Jensen will host a Fireside Chat in mid-January to share the club traditions. New members are especially encouraged to attend.
  • There will be no meeting on December 28.
  • The newest pair in the Rotary Lunch Lottery is Sherrie Fisher and Liz Werhane.

Program: Jill Ireland Van Allen shares her craft talk

  • Jill was born and raised in Oakland, CA, and greatly influenced by her grandparents.
  • As a teenager, she traveled throughout Europe with her mother.
  • She focused on Latin American studies at University of California, Santa Cruz.
  • She went to the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
  • She spent 8 years in China and moved to Hong Kong.
  • She worked in the footwear industry for many years: Reebok, Nike and GBMI.
  • A couple of years ago, she did a service trip to Haiti.
  • She now works in insurance and focuses on service, not her work.
  • She is a passionate runner and an accomplished marathoner.

Part II: Hanna Jacobs of Jody House

  • Jody House was founded in the 1980s after a woman named Jody suffered brain injuries when she was hit by a drunk driver.
  • In the 1990s, the first house was purchased. They recently moved into a new location, which the nonprofit owns, at 625 Chapala (the former location of Chad’s restaurant). When you go there, they say “welcome home.”
  • They help adults with brain injuries re-connect with people and a community.
  • They offer support and activities. It’s not residential.
  • There are about 100 members.
  • What’s on Jody House’s wishlist? Money to fund more field trips.
  • Joe Weiland and Andrew Chung are both on the board of directors for Jody House.
