  • Jordan visited Nicaragua and got to know GoCare.
  • GoCare was founded by Rotarians from District 5240 12 years ago. It’s a US charitable humanitarian organization that aims to eliminate extreme poverty through education in Nicaragua.
  • There are 2.4 billion people in the world living in extreme poverty –$2.50 or less per day — that’s 40% of the population.
  • Poverty leads to drugs, gangs, terrorism — the breakdown of civil society.
  • We can give things: food, shelter, medical care, sanitation, etc. This creates dependency. The other way to help is to give people the means to help themselves: education. That’s GoCare’s approach.
  • The speakers shared a couple of videos, showing how GoCare provides pre-school, school, university scholarships and vocational training. These services are ongoing.
  • The focus has been in the community of Pantanel. They’re expanding to other communities.
  • The annual budget is $250,000 with 16 full-time employees. Examples:  $237/year/student in the pre-school. 69 students in English classes and cost is $126/student/year. Community center operates at $60/day. You’re invited to donate personally, as a club or as part of a specific project/grant.
  • Kids are becoming leaders in their communities.
  • You can like GoCare on Facebook and/or visit the website.
  • Consider visiting Nicaragua.
  • Luz Maria is a director of GoCare.
  • Bill Ringer visited Nicaragua, and he said GoCare really understands how to break the cycle of poverty. Partnering with GoCare will help us be successful in Nicaragua.
  • In gratitude to our speakers, we’ll donate 15 dictionaries to third graders in their names.
