President’s Announcements:

  • Dana Goba awarded Paul Harris Fellow honors to two members. Joe Weiland is a PHF +4. Burt Chortkoff is a PHF +2
  • New Weird Board Member: Bill Abel will serve as our Community Service Director.
  • A few members attended the City of the Children choir performance at Elings Park last weekend.
  • Save the Date for these upcoming events:
    – International Committee Trip to Nicaragua
    – Group 8 Social
    – District Conference
  • Fiesta: We need volunteers for the Horseman BBQ from 1-5. If we get done early on Thursday, we’ll all go over to Mercado del Norte. Graham Guess‘s band, I Want My 80s, performs from 5:30 – 7:30 PM.
  • Rotaract hosts a Miniature Golf Tournament in mid September. Sponsors play Friday, September 12. The general public plays Saturday, September 13. Sponsorships start at $125. On family day, you can play for $5. They can still use volunteers. Visit the Rotaract website to contact them to volunteer.
  • All members are asked to volunteer at the Fiddlers’ Festival. The next committee meeting is Thursday, August 14 at 5:30 PM.

  • David Vo invited members to purchase Rotary license plate frames. There are two options. One is $8.85 and one is $17.85.
  • Our Past District Governor, Jan Lindsay, has experience a very serious health issue while in Nicaragua.  He has been transferred to Cedars Sinai hospital where Pam, their family, and the doctors are assessing his condition and where he is getting outstanding medical care.  Jan is currently in a coma.  As additional updates are available, we will keep you informed. Please keep the Jan and the family in your prayers.
  • Raffle Results: David Vo won.
  • Little Known Fact: This member saw Elvis Presley filming a movie when he/she was a child. It was Susan Klein-Rothschild.

  • Weird Al Video of the week: Alexander Graham Bell lived March 3, 1847 to August 2, 1922. It’s the anniversary of the inventor of the telephone’s death, so we celebrate with Amish Paradise.

Program: Graham Guess introduced Stephan Hermann to present “Development of Programs for At-Risk-Youth”

  • Stephan is an entrepreneur and athlete. He’s been a business coach for Fortune 500 countries around the world.
  • He’s received an international service award.
  • He was a top 100 world ranked tennis player. In 1998, he held the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest tennis rally — 6 hours 45 minutes in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
  • His outlook on life was shaped by getting into tennis at age 6. He eventually realized that his only relationships with men were through competition.
  • He has a passion around helping boys to become better men and for men to become better men. They create mentor relationships, and both the mentee and mentor benefit.
  • Mentors can close gaps from their own teenage years.
  • Facts from a June Esquire article: 42% of college students are men.Boys are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADD or a learning disorder. They’re likely to score worse on standardized reading or writing tests than girls. Men are less likely to finish high school or college. 20x more likely to be in prison. 2x as likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.
  • Boys to Men evolved into Genderations. Girls have similar issues.
  • He plans to found Genderations locally by the spring. He’s asking for time, talent, and treasure.
